Assam is an abode of tea gardens

The first major reason why you must visit Assam is the famous tea tourism in Assam. The state houses over 100 tea plantation estates, each of which has its own uniqueness. You will find the most number of tea estates in Dibrugarh in Assam. You can also choose to explore tea gardens in other areas in Assam like Tinsukia, Jorhat, Sivasagar, Karimganj, the list is endless! Walking through the lush green tea gardens while smelling the aroma of freshly grown tea leaves is an experience worth cherishing forever.

To make things even more magical, the surrounding hills and forests amalgamate and create a tranquil setup, perfect for peace seekers. So, take a break from the hustle and bustle of city life and go on a soul searching journey to these tea estates. Don’t miss the chance to drink some aromatic tea made from Assam tea leaves from the nearby tea stalls. Interestingly, Assam tea estates supply tea leaves to the leading tea manufacturers in India. So, the cup of tea you drink every morning might have been plucked from leaves of one of these Assam tea estates. If you are a true tea lover, just like us, these tea plantations will be some of the best places to visit in Assam during winter as the Assam Tea Festival is hosted in the winter month of November every year.

Assam houses extensive wildlife

Another reason that will make your trip to Assam a worthy experience is the array of numerous wild creatures the state is home to. In the list of top 10 tourist places in Assam are many national parks and wildlife sanctuaries. Spotting the rarely seen wild animals enjoying their natural habitat is a one-of-a-kind experience. Take this suggestion and opt for a jungle safari. And you can explore the rich flora and fauna from close in these sanctuaries. Tigers, one-horned rhinoceros, sambar, langur and hornbills, you can find all these and many more species of animals. Look up and you will also find many rare species of birds that create a harmonious melody with their chirpings. The guides on the safari will take you to places where you can find the desired animals.

Speaking of sanctuaries, there are quite a few wildlife sanctuaries to visit in Assam. Our top recommendations for you will be Chakrashila Wildlife Sanctuary, Kaziranga National Park, Bornadi Wildlife Sanctuary and Bura-Chapori Wildlife Sanctuary. You can even choose to stay overnight at some of these wildlife sanctuaries to watch the wild creatures in the dark.

Assam provides plenty of adventure activities

If you think Assam is only about natural beauty and aromatic tea, then luckily, you are wrong. This serene tourist destination also offers some thrilling adventurous activities that will spice up your trip. River rafting, trekking, kayaking and rock climbing, there are plenty of such exciting Assam things to do that make it a great travel destination. Take our advice and try paramotoring in Sivasagar which is only one hour drive from Jorhat airport. The mesmerising sight of Assam landscapes is worth a watch from the sky. Also, the thrill of gliding through the sky with cold winds brushing your face is unmatchable.

If you are a water baby, our recommendation is river rafting in the Brahmaputra river. The turbulent glacial waters create challenging tracks for rafting. Make sure you abide by the instructions of the experts while river rafting instead of getting overexcited and messing up your safety.

Assam has a unique culture

The best thing about travelling to new places is that you get to know about a new culture. Assam also has a distinct culture that will charm you when you come here. From festivals to food, from tea gardens to temples, everything here has a unique touch of Assamese culture. Talk to the locals, learn some basics of their language and culture, and you will surely find it adorable.

When you go to explore the tourist places near Assam, you will find men and women dressed up in their traditional attire which is completely different from what people wear in cities. Try to plan your visit in April when the grand Bihu festival is hosted in Assam. You can see unique clothes and sports like bullfight and kabaddi during this festival. While enjoying the festival, watch and learn the beautiful Bihu dance which is typical of Assamese culture. And don’t forget to check out the local markets here to purchase some traditional commodities that will also give you a glimpse of the culture.

Assam offers unique local cuisine

One of the biggest Assam attractions is its flavoursome cuisine. The Assamese dishes are unique in taste that will surely leave a mark on your taste bud. Not too spicy but full of flavours is what can sum up Assamese delicacies in short. You can try some of the famous local dishes, including, tenga, duck curry, kharali and khar. You must also try desserts, the most famous one being pitha. You will get pitha in other Indian states as well, but nothing matches the Assamese pithas. These are made of rice powder and are consumed with liquid jaggery mostly. So, while hopping through the Assam travel places, look out for food stalls selling these pithas and other Assamese dishes.

Although there are a number of restaurants serving multiple cuisines in Assam, we would highly recommend you try the local delicacies. The best places to find authentic Assamese dishes are the local food stalls. If you can gel up with the Assamese locals, you might get an invitation to their house for an Assamese meal as well. Nothing better than that!

We hope by now you are tempted to make your next trip to Assam. So, when you start planning your trip, make sure to add these 5 offerings we talked about to your travel guide to Assam. And you will come back with a bag full of amazing experiences!
