Croatia is busier than ever, although each year increasing numbers of travelers seek out this idyllic haven on the Adriatic, known for its richly historic and evocative cities, exceptional food and wine, and heavenly sailing waters.
1.Sailing Croatia is not just about the beaches. The most interesting and larger islands showcase thousands of years of architecture and art, which like the country’s food and wine, were influenced by the original Greek settlers, the Illyrians, the Romans and the Slavic tribes that succumbed to the seductions of the Adriatic Sea, the refinement of Venice and the Austro-Hungarian Empire.
2.But there are many great coastal havens. The top beaches are the least accessible and can best be reached by boat. This would include Lubenice on the island of Cres; Bol on Brac island; the islands of the Kornati National Park; and Stiniva Cove on Vis island. Croatia’s swimming season runs between late May and early October, depending on whether you are in the northern or southern part of the Adriatic.
3.You can sail the exceptional Kornati islands. The Kornati National Park is many people’s favorite area when sailing the Adriatic. For First-time visitors to Croatia, the islands, as a protected National Park area, are scarcely habited lunar landscapes that come to life with visitors arriving on yachts during the summer months. Although sailing in the Park carries a higher price tag, the experience is worth every bit of money spent.
4.There are still interesting, affordable spots. The town of Osijek in Slavonia has not been discovered by the crowds, but has an interesting history, Hungarian influences, tasty food and great wines. Zagreb in the summer is another option. Stay overnight at the elegant Esplanade Hotel, a beautiful, five-star, Art Deco jewel built close to the railway station in 1925, when the Orient Express stopped in Zagreb. Explore the ancient, historic center of Zagreb and make sure to visit the colorful, noisy, heart of the city—the Dolac Market. Don’t miss the Museum of Broken Relationships and indulge your sweet tooth with the city’s favorite dessert, the Kremšnita, a layer cake similar to a millefeuille.
5.Istria. Black truffles are harvested in Istria year-round; the white truffle season starts in September and usually lasts through January. You can learn to hunt for truffles and unearth your own led by specially trained truffle-hunting dogs. These [trips] are best organized when exploring the hill towns of Motovun, Groznjan and Buzet that overlook the Mirna Valley.
Bosnia may not have beaches, but it has mountains. Peaks including Jahorina, Vlasic, and Bjelasnica are local hiking and skiing spots. Just take the train between Sarajevo and Mostar through the steep mountains and canyons passing along the turquoise waters of the Neretva River and see for yourself.
1.Its vibrant capital: Sarajevo
Nearly three quarters of Bosnia and Herzegovina’s capital was destroyed or damaged by shells and bombs during the war but, since then, Sarajevo has mostly returned to being the vibrant city of years past. Its historic center blends East and West – visitors can feel they’re in Vienna one minute and Istanbul the next. Sarajevo’s Ottoman past can be felt in the cobbled streets around Bascarsija. Here topped copper-green domes overlook narrow alleyway craft bazaars. Meanwhile, grand relics from the Austro-Hungarian Empire span the streets round Ferhadija. While there are signs of the city’s recent past – shrapnel-scarred walls and cemeteries on surrounding hillsides – Sarajevo is a city that embraces life.
2.Incredible nature
Traveling across Bosnia and Herzegovina, it’s impossible not to fall in love with the landscape. Dramatic rocky mountains, cut down the middle with turquoise blue rivers and gushing waterfalls, carpet most of the country. While Bosnia and Herzegovina only has a 25-kilometer slice of the Adriatic Coastline, overshadowed by the coves and bays of Croatia and Montenegro, the country does win out when it comes to epic gorges and valley drives.
3.Historic Towns
While it’s easy to spend days, if not weeks, exploring Sarajevo, it’s worth getting out of the capital to explore other towns.Mostar is one of Bosnia and Herzegovina’s most spectacular cities, with prime Ottoman-era architecture and its famous Stari Most (Old Bridge). The bridge was bombed in the Croat-Bosniak War in 1993, but has since been reconstructed. Also worth a visit is southern Herzegovina’s Ottoman-era Pocitelj, near Croatia. Jajce in northwest Bosnia is a stunning hilltop town crowned by a medieval fortress with a dramatic waterfall cascading at its base.
4.It’s cheap
Sarajevo is one of Europe’s cheapest capitals, and outside the city the prices just get lower. Eating out can cost as little as 3-5 Bosnian Marks (less than $3). When compared to neighboring Croatia, which has prices tending towards Western European levels, it’s ridiculously cheap. That said, visitors could still wind up spending all their money at the wonderful bazaars.
5.Great for shopping
There are some amazing shopping opportunities in Bosnia and Herzegovina. Not only are prices low when compared with the rest of Europe, the level of craftsmanship is amazing. Hand-hammered copper goods, some handmade delicate lace, as well as traditional carpets, weaves and jewelry are among the traditional specialties.
6.Land of adventure
Adventure travel fanatics are well catered for in Bosnia and Herzegovina. The rocky mountains are fantastic not just for hiking and climbing, but also rafting, paragliding and mountain biking. Going off the beaten track requires some care though, as some areas might still carry the risk of landmines left over from the war.
